The Oxford Dictionary defines 'floor' as an informal substitute of 'the ground'. However, the tendency to expand the meaning of 'floor' to the external situations taking place in the open air looks pretty obvious. But tracking the usage of both terms between 1950 and 2016 with the help of Google Ngram Viewer (an online tool for charting frequencies) reveals the opposite, 'the ground' still predominates, and its popularity in literature has even grown lately.
