“troubleshooted” or “troubleshot”? Is this really the correct word to use?

What gives the impression that "troubleshot" is not the correct option here? The word is formed from two other words - trouble and shoot. Since the latter is an irregular verb, I believe it's vital to commit to the form in past simple. This rule can be observed in a variety of other words.
